Windows XP Honeypot Statistics

For week 10/14/2002 – 10/20/2002

Chart 1:October 14-17, 2002

The above Chart represents all attacks except HTTP based on a Windows XP Honeypot system.  There were a large quantity of HTTP based attacks and probes, many Code Red and Nimda.  This was a default Windows XP build with no activity on the Internet available from Monday October 14th through Thursday October 17th 2002.

Chart 2:October 19-20, 2002

Chart number 2 depicts attacks and probes over the weekend on a Windows XP Honeypot.  This system ran Kazaa[1] and downloaded files over the course of 2 days.  In addition to downloading, the system shared all downloaded files in Kazaa under default Kazaa settings.  Relatively speaking, there was no indication of an increase in attacks from using Kazaa.
